Sony Remains Firm on Phasing Out Physical Discs for PlayStation

It’s been a month since the announcement that physical disc production for PlayStation games is coming to an end, and fans have been vocal in their discontent. Recently, Sony executives addressed the backlash, confirming that there are no plans to reverse this decision.

During a recent financial results presentation for Q1 FY2026, chief financial officer Lin Tao responded to a question about the rationale behind this shift. The inquiry focused on whether this move was essential for the advancement of the next generation of consoles or merely a strategy to enhance PlayStation’s profit margins. The discussion also touched on how the company plans to handle the significant consumer criticism stemming from this choice.

Tao explained:

“We made this decision for several reasons, with the primary one being the ongoing digitalization of content. This trend isn’t exclusive to PlayStation; it’s a broader shift across all types of media. After careful consideration and extensive thought, we reached this conclusion and are moving forward with it cautiously.”

He acknowledged the strong opinions from the community, emphasizing their understanding of the emotional connection many have with gaming. “Games are cherished by many, serving as a beloved form of entertainment tied to fond memories. We recognize these feelings and want to explore how we can engage with gamers in the evolving digital landscape.”

A previous corporate report indicated that physical discs represented only 3% of PlayStation sales in 2024. Many players prefer digital games for their convenience, especially for major releases, as it ensures they receive their copy on launch day and allows for easy preloading. However, this convenience also means gamers lose the ability to resell their titles, which benefits Sony by reducing the availability of secondhand games and potentially boosting digital sales.

Given that most sales are now digital, Tao stated that discontinuing physical discs shouldn’t negatively impact PlayStation’s business. It appears the decision is final, and Sony’s current focus is on damage control and mending its relationship with dissatisfied community members, some of whom have threatened to boycott the company.

One such boycott is scheduled for late August, where a group of PlayStation users plans to engage in “an economic and gameplay blackout,” during which participants are expected to turn off their consoles or log out for a week.

Anticipate 2028 to be a pivotal year for Sony.
