Sony Settles with Bungie Director Over Misconduct Allegations, Credits Him in Marathon

Christopher Barrett, a seasoned veteran with 25 years at Bungie, has settled his legal battle with Sony after suing the company for $100 million. His termination was attributed to what Sony described as a “pattern of misconduct” involving inappropriate messages exchanged with female colleagues. Barrett argued that his firing was a breach of contract, aimed at avoiding the payment of over $80 million owed to him following Sony’s $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie in 2022.

On July 8, Barrett announced on X that he had reached an agreement with Sony and Bungie to resolve the lawsuit. He expressed satisfaction with the outcome and gratitude to his supporters, stating that this resolution allows him to focus on the next chapter of his gaming career.

In a joint statement regarding the settlement, it was confirmed that the litigation involving Sony Interactive Entertainment, Bungie, and Barrett had been resolved. Barrett, who played a significant role in the development of some of Bungie’s most iconic titles, was recognized as the original Game Director for Marathon, with his name added to the game’s credits.

Barrett’s journey with Bungie began in 1998 with Myth II: Chimera, but he left the company in 2024 during the development of Marathon. Reports indicated that his termination followed an investigation into text messages he had sent to female employees. He later expressed regret if anyone felt uncomfortable during their interactions. Following his dismissal, Barrett filed a lawsuit, claiming that the investigation was a “sham” and that his firing was a tactic to avoid paying him his full bonus from the studio’s sale.

In February 2025, Sony took a proactive stance by releasing some of the messages in question, which included casual inquiries about clothing and compliments directed at a female employee. Barrett’s legal team countered that the messages were selectively chosen and criticized Sony for not providing the complete context of the conversations, arguing that there was no legitimate basis for his termination.

While the specifics of the settlement remain undisclosed, Barrett’s inclusion in the credits of Marathon serves as a significant acknowledgment of his contributions. This resolution comes at a challenging time for Bungie, which recently faced substantial layoffs following the conclusion of Destiny 2. Although new seasonal content for Marathon is planned to continue through this year, the studio’s future remains uncertain after the loss of nearly 300 employees.
