Sony Unveils a Surprise Retro 2D God of War Prequel Available for Immediate Play

We may not be seeing a new 3D God of War just yet, but Sony surprised everyone at the latest PlayStation Showcase with a shadowdrop of a 2D spin-off. God of War: Sons of Sparta is a retro action platformer that takes us back to the roots of Kratos’ journey.

The game is described as a 2D action platformer featuring a story that dives into Kratos’ youth during his intense training at the Spartan Agoge, alongside his brother Deimos. Players will face various challenges that test their training while exploring themes of duty and honor.

In this adventure, Kratos battles mythical beasts from Greek lore using his sword and shield, collecting Gifts of Olympus to unlock new abilities. The visuals evoke the charm of classic pixel art action games from the Sega Genesis era, but with a modern twist. Let’s hope the gameplay lives up to the nostalgia!

Developed by Mega Cat Studios, known for 2023’s WrestleQuest and the revival of Backyard sports games, this title was created in collaboration with Santa Monica Studio. It’s currently available for download on PlayStation 5 for $30.
