Sony unveils new God of War title for PS5 featuring a fresh lead character.

It’s been almost four years since the release of God of War: Ragnarok, and the series is making a comeback with a fresh take on Greek mythology. God of War: Laufey was unveiled in a 20-minute trailer during a recent showcase, and this PlayStation 5 title will feature Deborah Ann Woll as Faye, also known as Laufey.

While a release date hasn’t been announced, development appears to be progressing well.

The trailer opens with Faye’s body being burned as she transitions to the afterlife. She awakens in a surreal, decaying realm filled with strange creatures and seems to have a clear understanding of Kratos and Atreus’s situation, prompting her to rush to their aid. Almost immediately, she faces off against bizarre flower-like creatures that underestimate her combat prowess. As expected from someone married to the God of War, her fighting style is fierce and brutal.

Faye is accompanied by a mysterious cosmic cube, voiced by Jack Quaid, and a ribbon guardian named Rue, portrayed by Perlina Lau.

The development team has emphasized their commitment to crafting a unique gameplay experience for Faye that meets the high expectations of fans. They aim to ensure that both she and Kratos can deliver and withstand powerful blows.

Laufey seems to be taking bolder creative risks compared to the mainline God of War titles. The upcoming PS5 game blends various mythologies to weave its narrative, and the combat promises to be more intimate, featuring fluid and “hyper-responsive” movement. Faye’s abilities allow her to seamlessly transition between ground and air, enabling extensive combo chains.

Speculation about the next God of War’s direction has been circulating since last summer, with leaks hinting at a return to Greek mythology without Kratos as the central figure. A recent side-scrolling game, God of War: Sons of Sparta, didn’t quite hit the mark, but this new installment appears to be much more promising and could address long-standing fan theories.

In this new spinoff, players will follow Kratos’ wife, Faye, a surprising Jötunn warrior. The events of God of War: Ragnarok were triggered by a horn that summoned the massive serpent Jörmungandr, a key figure in the prophecy of the world’s end. One popular fan theory suggests that Faye may have played that horn.

This theory posits that Faye could be a time-traveling entity caught between life and death, which sounds wild but aligns with the trailer’s hints that she is trapped in a divine afterlife where true death is elusive.

However, it’s established that Faye assisted Kratos and Atreus in navigating the afterlife, making the theory less far-fetched. God of War director Cory Barlog has expressed a desire to explore the story behind the horn, and given his admiration for Faye, the premise of this new game resonates with dedicated fans.

“Faye has way more power than all of them,” Barlog mentioned in a past interview. “She is actually the controller of so much within this universe. […] I don’t know how we’re going to tell this or when we’re going to tell this, but I really want to tell that story of Kratos and Faye meeting.”

The God of War franchise has been thriving since its debut in 2005, when players were introduced to an exceptionally angry Spartan warrior on a quest against the Greek pantheon. The 2018 installment offered a more cinematic and mature experience, shifting the focus to Norse mythology. In this game, Kratos raises his son Atreus while they embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of his deceased wife. Unlike previous titles, players could control Atreus, adding a new layer to the narrative and gameplay. The overarching story still revolved around Kratos’ violent past but was reframed through the lens of fatherhood. God of War (2018) is now celebrated as one of the best games of its generation and received a PC port in 2022 with enhanced visuals.

The saga continued in God of War: Ragnarok, where Kratos faced the challenge of raising a teenage son while trying to prevent Ragnarok, the end of the world. This installment built upon the successful elements of its predecessor without attempting to reinvent the wheel. The stakes were high as Kratos sought to avert catastrophe, yet the game maintained a grounded feel by focusing on familial relationships within Norse mythology. A free DLC in 2023 introduced roguelike elements to Ragnarok, further shifting the focus away from Kratos and hinting at new directions for the series.

The 2022 game wrapped up that narrative arc, providing a clean slate for the next God of War title without the constraints of cross-generation support.

While it may not break new ground in the Metroidvania genre, Sons of Sparta is a valuable addition to the God of War legacy.
