Sony’s New Policy May Spark Legal Action Against PS5 Disc Detractors

Since Sony revealed plans to phase out physical PlayStation 5 discs by July 2026, frustrated fans have been vocal in their opposition. Every time Sony promotes anything related to the PS5, the comments section is flooded with dissent, even if the game in question is still available on disc. This backlash has persisted long enough that the company is now implementing a bold new strategy aimed at quieting its most passionate critics.

This new initiative is framed as a harassment policy, giving it a seemingly legitimate purpose. Many of the behaviors Sony aims to combat include abusive language, threats, slander, intimidation, discrimination, inappropriate conduct, attacks on employees, and unauthorized visits to company offices. However, what stands out is the inclusion of terms that could easily apply to the ongoing criticism regarding the end of PS5 disc production. The list of prohibited actions features “persistent and repeated, or prolonged, demands,” “requests unrelated to products or services,” and “demands against employees.” The announcement also notes that the list of forbidden behaviors is not exhaustive.

These descriptions align closely with how many critics are voicing their concerns about Sony’s decision to stop PS5 disc production by 2028. Sony has stated that those who violate these policies may face restrictions or suspensions from customer service. Violating the policy could also lead to collaboration with law enforcement and potential legal actions, including criminal charges.

Sony has not yet responded to requests for further clarification. It remains uncertain how these policies will be enforced and whether the company will specifically target its most vocal opponents. Given the recent developments where Sony is defending a class action lawsuit by claiming that consumers do not truly own digital games—the only option left once physical copies are gone—it seems unlikely that disgruntled fans will relent anytime soon.
