Sophie Turner immerses herself in games and comics to prepare for her role as Lara Croft, opting to skip the films to forge her own interpretation.
Sophie Turner is diving deep into her preparation for the role of Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider series on Prime Video, but she’s steering clear of previous portrayals of the legendary character.
“I’m playing the games, I’m reading the comics. I’ve got the Colossal Collections, which are 500 pages. I’m kind of doing all of it, but not really focusing on the previous iterations, because I don’t want to imitate; I’ve gotta create my own thing. So, as much as I love those movies, I can’t watch them right now,” she shared in a recent interview.
The films she’s avoiding for the time being include Angelina Jolie’s early 2000s entries (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life) and Alicia Vikander’s 2018 reboot, simply titled Tomb Raider. The franchise also saw an animated series on Netflix, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which featured Marvel star Hayley Atwell as the iconic archaeologist.
Turner’s preparation goes beyond just gaming and reading; she’s also hitting the gym to get in shape for the action-packed role. “I can’t say much, but my preparation began in February. I’ve been training for a long time now, coming up on a year, and we’re going to start shooting,” she hinted, suggesting that filming could kick off soon.
“I’m really excited, but I feel prepped, and I feel really lucky to have such a great relationship with Amazon, and I’m excited for the world to see what we do with Lara and Tomb Raider. I think it’s going to be something special,” she added.
While many details about the series remain under wraps, there are some intriguing updates regarding the cast. Following the announcement of Sigourney Weaver as the original character Evelyn Wallis, 10 new cast members have been revealed, including Bill Paterson from House of the Dragon as butler Winston, Martin Bobb-Semple from Free Rein as tech expert Zip, and Jason Isaacs as Lara’s uncle Atlas de Mornay.
As we await more news on the Tomb Raider series, there’s plenty of excitement brewing in the gaming and TV worlds.
