Sophie Turner Reveals Year-Long Training for Tomb Raider Role: “It’s Going to Be Something Special”

Filming for the upcoming Tomb Raider TV series on Prime Video hasn’t kicked off yet, leaving us in suspense about the adventures that Lara Croft will embark on in this new adaptation.

Just a day after the announcement of 10 new cast members, Sophie Turner, who will portray Lara, shared insights into her rigorous training regimen leading up to the shoot. It’s clear that the series is set to deliver plenty of action.

“I can’t reveal too much, but my preparation started back in February [2025]. I’ve been training for nearly a year now, and we’re gearing up to begin filming in January 2026,” the Game of Thrones alum shared. “I’m really excited and feel well-prepared. I’m fortunate to have such a great partnership with Amazon, and I can’t wait for everyone to see what we create with Lara and Tomb Raider. I believe it’s going to be something special.”

Among the recently confirmed cast members are Bill Paterson from House of the Dragon, who will play the butler Winston, and Martin Bobb-Semple from Free Rein, taking on the role of tech expert Zip. Jason Isaacs is also joining the cast as Lara’s uncle, Atlas de Mornay. In the video games, Atlas is a minor character who tries to take control of the Croft family estate after Lara’s mother goes missing. He appears in Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015) and is mentioned in its sequel, Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018), primarily through voice recordings and documents.

Atlas has a more significant role in Dark Horse’s rebooted Tomb Raider comic series, especially in issue #7, released on August 24, 2016. This suggests that writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, co-showrunner alongside Chad Hodge, may draw inspiration from both the comics and the games.

As we await further updates on the Tomb Raider series, there’s plenty of excitement brewing in the world of upcoming TV shows and video game adaptations.
