Space Marine 2’s Voice Pack DLC Pulled Due to Issues, Now Available for Free
Just under a month ago, Saber Interactive rolled out a free update for its popular third-person shooter, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, along with a $5 DLC that introduced new voice acting for several characters. While it’s great to see ongoing support for the game two years post-launch, the poorly received paid dialogue overshadowed the exciting addition of a new Techmarine class and a co-op mission. In response to the backlash, the developer has announced plans to refund everyone who purchased the DLC and will make it available for free.
The Chapter Voice Pack 1 was marketed as a way to enhance the gameplay experience with a claimed 450 new lines of dialogue for beloved characters. However, it was oddly sold separately rather than included in the game’s season passes. As reported, the DLC didn’t fully replace the original character voices, leading to moments where characters would revert to their previous lines, which felt quite ridiculous. Many players on Steam noted that the pack seemed to consist mostly of new grunts, and there were suggestions that the 450 lines might be a total across all languages rather than per language.
This resulted in an Overwhelmingly Negative rating on Steam for the DLC, which remains unchanged. Only 16 percent of the 672 user ratings are positive, with players frustrated that this was likely intended to be the first of several such packs, as it only re-voiced three out of seven classes. In a somewhat delayed response, the developer acknowledged the feedback on social media, stating, “We heard your feedback regarding the Chapter Voice Pack DLC and wanted to address it. It’s obvious the DLC has failed to meet your expectations and we are sorry about that. Delivering quality content – free or not – is a priority for us.”
As a result, all players who purchased the DLC will receive a refund, and the voice pack will be made free moving forward. “We are currently setting up the refund with platform owners and will come back soon with more info,” they added. “Always grateful for your dedication to our game.”
As of now, the transition to free has not yet occurred, and the pack is still available for purchase on Steam despite the controversy. Fortunately, even with this hiccup, Space Marine II continues to shine and is currently 67 percent off in Steam’s Spring sale.
