SpaceX Acquires Cursor for $60 Billion
Just days after its monumental IPO, SpaceX has announced a staggering $60 billion acquisition of Cursor. This strategic move aims to bolster Elon Musk’s vast empire, which spans rockets, AI, and social media, as it seeks to attract lucrative enterprise clients and catch up with AI competitors like Anthropic and OpenAI.
The acquisition was somewhat anticipated, as SpaceX revealed a unique arrangement back in April, where it would either purchase the programming platform for $60 billion or incur a $10 billion breakup fee. The company had been delaying the finalization of the deal while navigating its public offering.
In a recent SEC filing, SpaceX indicated that it anticipates the deal to be finalized by the third quarter of 2026. Musk has previously voiced his dissatisfaction with xAI’s coding capabilities, which fall short compared to popular alternatives like Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex. By acquiring Cursor, which provides similar automation tools for coding, SpaceX could significantly enhance its offerings. The startup has seen rapid growth in recent years, driven by a rising demand for more efficient programming solutions and a trend towards “vibe coding” in the tech landscape.
