Speculations on Release Date and Features for the Upcoming Minecraft Update
The next Minecraft update is still under wraps, as the recent Mounts of Mayhem expansion just launched on December 9. Typically, new updates roll out every three months, so we can anticipate the next one around March 2026.
As for the release date, we expect the upcoming update to drop in early March 2026. Mojang has committed to delivering four updates each year, and with Mounts of Mayhem arriving in early December, it’s reasonable to project that the next update will follow about three months later. For those experimenting with the Snapshots feature, which allows players to test new content in beta, you might already have some inklings about what’s on the horizon.
While specific details about the next Minecraft update are still a mystery, a recent video from the Minecraft team shed light on what won’t be making the cut. One team member noted, “We try to steer clear of pop culture references,” while another added, “Like hot dogs or pirates! However, we could introduce Villagers that inhabit the sea, so it’s all about striking that balance to keep the Minecraft world unique.” They also mentioned, “When we begin brainstorming for a new update, we look at community feedback. Sometimes a joke sparks an idea. For instance, during the Village and Pillage update, we included a lily of the valley, which is actually poisonous in real life, to educate players. One developer chimed in with the idea of adding a suspicious stew.”
As for new features, while detailed information about the upcoming update is still pending, there are already some minor tweaks visible in the Snapshots, along with a change in how Minecraft updates are numbered.
Mojang recently revealed that the update numbering system will be revamped to clearly distinguish updates from patches, making it easier to understand. The first update of 2026 will be labeled 1.26.1, where the middle number indicates the year and the last number signifies the update’s sequence for that year—so expect to see 1.26.2, 1.26.3, and 1.26.4 throughout the year, at least for Java. The Bedrock version will have a slightly different approach, as it receives updates more frequently, meaning the number following 26 can exceed that of Java’s version. In the case of patches, Java will add an additional number after the drop number, like 1.25.2.1.
In terms of Villager trading, Mojang has announced a new system where trades unlocked by Villager professionals will now be determined by random sequences, similar to loot drops and barter loot. This change allows datapack developers to customize Villager trading, including for Wandering Villagers.
