Spider-Man: Brand New Day Sets Record as Highest-Grossing Film in Domestic Box Office History

Spider-Man is riding high right now. After just 47 days in theaters, *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* has surpassed *Star Wars: The Force Awakens* to claim the title of the highest-grossing film in domestic box office history. Spidey hit $936.773 million on Tuesday, edging past *The Force Awakens*’ $936 million. That Star Wars entry held the record for over a decade since its release on December 18, 2015.

*Brand New Day* is also crushing it globally, raking in $2.45 billion, making it the third highest-grossing film worldwide, trailing only *Avatar* ($2.9 billion) and *Avengers: Endgame* ($2.7 billion). The top five is rounded out by James Cameron’s films, including *Avatar: The Way of Water* ($2.3 billion) and *Titanic* ($2.2 billion).

One challenge ahead for *Brand New Day* is whether it can be the first film to cross the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office. While it’s still technically possible, it seems unlikely without a re-release, especially since it earned around $12-13 million from September 8 to September 14. The film kicked off with a bang, grossing $360 million during its opening weekend, marking the biggest debut ever in the U.S. It’s important to note that these figures aren’t adjusted for inflation; if they were, *Gone with the Wind* would still dominate, having grossed over $200 million in its time, which would translate to nearly $1.9 billion today.

*Brand New Day* is the latest triumph in a year filled with domestic box office hits. *The Odyssey* stands as the second-highest-grossing film in North America, pulling in $601 million since its July 17 release. Animated features like *Toy Story 5* and *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie* follow in third and fourth place, respectively, with $480 million and $430 million.

This year has also seen some surprising horror successes, such as *Obsession*, which ranks seventh at the domestic box office with $263 million, and *Backrooms*, which has made $197 million. *Obsession* was produced for under $1 million, while *Backrooms* had a budget of $10 million. Overall, the domestic box office is on track for a $10 billion year, marking its first since before the pandemic; as of last month, it surpassed $7 billion, reflecting a 20 percent increase compared to the same time in 2025.

Marvel and Sony’s latest film has joined an elite group.
