Spider-Man Set to Swing into IMAX Following Blockbuster Opening Weekend
After an incredible weekend at the box office, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to hit IMAX screens across North America starting August 6. The exclusive hold on this format is coming to an end, but Nolan’s blockbuster will still be available in select IMAX theaters. Regardless, fans of Tom Holland can look forward to experiencing the film in stunning high fidelity.
Brand New Day has made a staggering $360 million domestically, marking the largest opening weekend ever in the U.S. Its global debut of $927 million ranks second all-time, just behind Avengers: Endgame’s $1.22 billion. Together with The Odyssey, which has grossed $911.4 million worldwide, these two films have created the biggest weekend in domestic box office history, raking in over $430 million combined.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced challenges in recent years, with several Phase 5 films like Thunderbolts and The Marvels falling short of expectations, Spider-Man films have consistently performed well at the box office. Spider-Man: No Way Home nearly reached $2 billion, placing it just behind Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War among MCU films. Prior to that, Spider-Man: Far From Home also crossed the billion-dollar mark.
The success of films like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey is propelling this year’s domestic box office toward a potential $10 billion milestone, a feat not achieved since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the domestic box office stands at over $6 billion. Toy Story 5 is the highest-grossing film in the U.S. at the moment, but Spider-Man: Brand New Day is likely to catch up quickly. This duo of successful films is a much-needed boost for Disney, which has recently faced setbacks with box office flops like the live-action Moana and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.
On the IMAX front, the company is coming off its best year ever, generating $1.28 billion at the global box office in 2025. With The Odyssey becoming the fastest film to reach $200 million in IMAX, it seems likely that this record will be surpassed. The ultra-high resolution IMAX 70mm version of Nolan’s epic has made waves, accounting for 12% of the film’s total IMAX box office despite being shown in only 41 locations worldwide. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day joining the IMAX lineup, the format is poised to continue attracting audiences to theaters.
