“Splitgate Developer Urges Players Not to Worry About Low Numbers After Chaotic Arena Reloaded Launch”

Splitgate: Arena Reloaded, which emerged from the tumultuous journey of Splitgate 2, has struggled to recapture the franchise’s former glory, leading to conversations about its low player count on Steam (731 at the time of writing, according to Steam Charts, and 720 per SteamDB). In light of this, developer 1047 Games has issued a statement addressing the “Steam Charts Conversations,” emphasizing that player counts aren’t the sole indicator of a game’s success.

“Steam Charts don’t measure fun,” the statement asserts. “They represent just one number, on one platform, at a specific moment.” 1047 Games makes a valid point; the visibility of Steam statistics, in contrast to the obscured data from consoles, often fuels misguided debates and an unhealthy fixation on arbitrary metrics like concurrent players. However, such a statement may not resonate with a sense of triumph.

“They don’t reflect the complete experience or the joy of playing, nor do they capture the vibrant community that is actively shaping Arena Reloaded (including upcoming features like Arena Royale),” the studio adds.

“Over the past six months, we have rebuilt Splitgate from the ground up because we believe in the game, our team, and our community. The 1047 team is dedicated to delivering the best version of Splitgate possible.” It’s important to note that in June 2025, the team faced a reduction in size due to a “small” round of layoffs, with the founders also opting to forgo their salaries during this period.

“To our amazing community: thank you. Your feedback and passion have made Arena Reloaded better every day,” 1047 concludes. “And to those who haven’t tried it yet: Arena Reloaded is free, the gameplay is at its peak, and we invite you to dive in and form your own opinion. Many dedicated individuals have poured their hearts into this project.”

While I won’t celebrate the challenges faced by those who are passionate about their craft, I also can’t say I’m surprised by the current situation, as 2025 was a tumultuous year for Splitgate. It arguably kicked off with CEO Ian Proulx’s appearance at Summer Game Fest, which was more memorable for his controversial remarks about the FPS genre and a rather questionable hat choice. However, the real turning point came with the release of Splitgate 2, which fans criticized as a step back.

1047 Games acknowledged player feedback and returned Splitgate 2 to beta for improvements, admitting it “launched too early” and aiming for a better outcome on the second attempt. Unfortunately, this strategy didn’t yield the desired results, similar to the re-release challenges faced by other titles like Multiversus and Crucible. In a further twist, the Splitgate titles were merged into Splitgate: Arena Reloaded, leading to the current discussions about Steam Charts. Once celebrated and immensely popular on Steam and beyond, the franchise now finds itself in a muddled state.
