Spotify Introduces Podcast Memberships for Exclusive Benefits
Spotify is enhancing the way podcast creators can monetize their content by introducing a new Memberships subscription feature, which allows fans to pay for exclusive perks. Initially announced in May, this feature is now rolling out across 34 regions, enabling podcasters to offer benefits such as extra content, early access, bonus episodes, and fewer ads behind a paywall.
Listeners can easily find Memberships on a podcast’s Spotify page, where they can subscribe and access exclusive content with just a few taps. Creators have the flexibility to set their pricing and bundle various benefits across different subscription tiers, retaining 90 percent of the revenue generated from memberships. Spotify is also equipping podcasters with tools to analyze and grow their Memberships audience, including targeted promotions, free trial offers, and community engagement features like member badges and welcome clips.
This setup resembles a Patreon-style membership model, allowing fans to provide additional support to their favorite creators, distinguishing it from the podcast subscription feature introduced in 2021. Podcasters can leverage Memberships alongside other revenue streams available on Spotify, such as ads and the Spotify Partner Program.
To be eligible for Memberships, shows must be hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone, and meet criteria including at least 100 consumption hours, 100 listeners or viewers, and three published episodes. Additionally, Spotify is facilitating the transition for podcasters who manage subscriptions on other platforms, enabling them to bring their paywalled content to Spotify through its Open Access feature.
