Spotify Will Not Promote Music Created by AI Personas
Spotify is set to introduce a new labeling system for AI artists, which will begin rolling out in mid-September. This update will feature an “AI Persona” badge on artist profiles within the app for those who “do not represent a real person.”
Starting today, artists can voluntarily disclose their AI persona status, but Spotify won’t rely solely on self-reporting. The platform will employ a combination of human reviews and AI tools to assess whether an artist’s profile, including their name and image, appears to be a photorealistic AI creation. If an artist is suspected of being AI-generated, they will receive a “Likely AI Persona” badge. The initial focus will be on artists who meet specific audience thresholds to prioritize the most listened-to profiles.
Music from these AI personas will not be included in editorial suggestions or personal recommendations by default. Spotify has noted that listeners prefer not to encounter profiles that seem human only to discover they are AI-generated. The platform aims to refine its algorithms to promote authentic human artists while minimizing the presence of spam or low-effort content in recommendations.
This initiative comes as AI-generated music increasingly populates streaming services, with reports indicating that such tracks now account for half of daily uploads on some platforms. Spotify clarifies that its new labels are focused on an artist’s identity rather than the methods used to create their music. While it currently lacks a system to identify AI-generated tracks like some competitors, it does allow artists to disclose their use of AI and has introduced a “Verified by Spotify” badge to confirm real human artists. Artists will be notified if a “Likely AI Persona” badge is applied to their profile and will have the option to appeal. Additionally, Spotify plans to implement a feature that enables listeners to flag artists with potential AI-generated identities.
