Sprout Pi Revitalizes Your Old iPod with Bluetooth, Streaming, and USB-C Features
There’s a thriving scene for iPod modifications, and among the standout options are the Sprout Pi and Sprout Pico. These full motherboard replacements integrate many sought-after upgrades into one package. Both models bring Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB-C, a microSD card slot, FLAC playback, and more to the table. While opening up an iPod can be a daunting task, the Sprout makes it easier since no soldering is required.
The firmware supports audio output over USB for wired headsets, as well as through the classic 3.5mm jack. With Bluetooth, you can easily connect to your AirPods or your favorite UE party speaker. The Wi-Fi capability allows for Google Cast and AirPlay streaming, along with podcast downloads, which is a nice bonus. The more advanced Sprout Pi even offers streaming through Spotify and Apple Music, plus access to apps, which somewhat contradicts the iPod’s charm of minimizing distractions and stepping away from algorithms.
However, the Sprout Pi is compatible only with 3rd- and 4th-generation iPods and the iPod mini, which may limit its audience. A crowdfunding campaign is set to launch soon, but pricing details have yet to be revealed.
