Team Asano, the talented group at Square Enix known for beloved JRPGs like Bravely Default, Dragon Quest, and Octopath Traveler, is reaching out to fans to find out which remake they’d like to see next – and many are hoping for Chrono Trigger.
It’s been 31 years since the original game launched in 1995, and the 2018 high-res PC version doesn’t quite count as a remake. I’m not alone in my desire for a modernized Chrono Trigger; numerous threads online are urging Square Enix to make it happen, and with Team Asano’s recent work on HD remakes of the first three Dragon Quest games, it feels more possible than ever.
Led by the skilled developer Tomoya Asano, the team has launched a poll aimed at longtime fans, and the questions have me feeling hopeful. As noted by users on a forum, one question asks, “Is there a Square Enix title you would like to see remade in the future?” The developers request that fans suggest only one title, which makes sense given the many valid options out there.
They also inquire, “In what format would you like it remade?” Options include another HD-2D style, a “doll look” reminiscent of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, a pixel remaster, or a full remaster – the choice is in the hands of the fans. Additionally, they want to know, “What extra elements would make you more likely to purchase a remake/remaster?” Think more main story content, endgame progression, and so on.
This questionnaire is definitely exciting, especially following a recent interview where Team Asano hinted at a potential new game in 2026. While it’s unlikely that a remake would be released this year, it’s fun to speculate. Commenters on the forum have also suggested other titles like Bahamut Lagoon and various entries from the Final Fantasy series.
