Star Fox Lacks the Essential Aura in Its Latest Game

On the surface, more screen time with Fox, Falco, Peppy, and Slippy seems like a dream come true for Star Fox fans. Despite Nintendo’s historical neglect of the space combat franchise, players still cherish these characters, especially after Fox’s appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. A remake of Star Fox 64, complete with a fresh visual style and added story elements, should hit the mark… right? However, the new photo-realistic designs of these iconic characters have left many fans feeling uneasy. The absence of the stylized look from previous Star Fox titles has stripped away some of the charm that made them so endearing.

Some character redesigns, particularly Falco’s, have drawn unflattering comparisons. The shift to a realistic art style has given the cool bird a more mundane appearance, making it seem like he skipped leg day since Star Fox Zero.

While the character designs are one aspect, many fans argue that the realistic art style lacks the expressiveness seen in Fox’s recent Mario Galaxy appearance. The clips we’ve seen of him in the upcoming Switch 2 game come off as stiff, which is a stark contrast to the lively animated version we just enjoyed.

Fans are already attempting to tweak the designs to bring back some of the series’ animated flair, but these efforts only highlight how Nintendo altered something that didn’t need changing. Historically, Nintendo hasn’t chased the photorealism trend, especially given its hardware limitations. This stylistic shift feels like an ill-advised attempt to appeal to a demographic that shuns “cartoony” games, ultimately draining the personality from Fox and his crew.

Perhaps the final product will resonate better when Star Fox launches on Switch 2 on June 25.
