Star Trek reboot hints at a bold new setting from the writers.
The highly anticipated Star Trek panel at San Diego Comic-Con is just around the corner on July 25, but fans are already buzzing with news about the franchise’s future. During the Directors on Directing panel, the creative team behind the upcoming Star Trek film shared some intriguing insights into the reboot.
Hosted by a well-known figure in the industry, the panel featured director Zach Cregger and the writing duo of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. Goldstein and Daley, recognized for their work on projects like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, were confirmed as the writers for the next Star Trek film last November, but details have been scarce until now. The host quickly pressed for an update on the project.
The writers revealed that the script is currently in development and noted that fans shouldn’t expect to see any familiar characters from the franchise in this reboot. Previous Star Trek films have either brought back beloved characters from series like The Original Series and The Next Generation or recast iconic roles, as seen in J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin timeline. However, the most exciting revelation came when Goldstein mentioned the film’s setting, stating that it will take place “further in the future than we’ve been before.”
While Star Trek is inherently set in our future, the timeline has varied across different series and films. If Goldstein considers the recent shows like Discovery and Starfleet Academy, the furthest the franchise has ventured into the future is the 32nd Century, achieved through time travel. If they choose to disregard that, then the furthest explored in Star Trek has been the 24th Century.
Regardless of the timeline they select, this approach paves the way for a fresh take on the series that can pay homage to its legacy while embarking on a new journey. Fans are eager to see what additional revelations the Hall H panel will bring regarding the future of Star Trek.
