Star Wars Zero Company Surpasses 1 Million Sales Despite Staff Layoffs
Star Wars Zero Company has emerged as a standout success in the often turbulent landscape of the gaming industry. With a very positive reception on Steam and an impressive score on Metacritic, it has reportedly surpassed 1 million sales within its first month, according to data from Alinea Analytics.
“Zero Company has generated around $50 million since its launch on August 27, which is commendable for this genre, especially during such a competitive release window, even with the Star Wars branding,” noted Rhys Elliott in a recent newsletter. “Star Wars Zero Company has achieved over a million sales across platforms, with Steam accounting for 69.9%, PlayStation at 19.9%, and Xbox at 10.2%, including Xbox PC.”
This estimate, while still awaiting confirmation, is significant for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it highlights another quality AA title achieving the success it deserves, joining the ranks of The Blood of Dawnwalker, another debut from a new studio that has also recently hit the million sales mark. Star Wars Zero Company stands out as an excellent XCOM-like game, featuring solid gameplay, robust systems, and engaging storytelling that exceeds expectations for its budget.
Reaching 1 million sales could also indicate a financial turnaround for Bit Reactor, the studio behind the game, which partnered with Respawn Entertainment. This success might allow them to reinstate many developers who were furloughed prior to launch due to budget constraints. Reports suggest that only a minimal team remained to manage post-launch patches and player support, and the studio is currently dealing with a lawsuit from its former CFO regarding management and ownership issues.
Neither Bit Reactor nor EA has provided clarity on how they plan to reintegrate employees or whether furloughs might lead to permanent layoffs. The resolution of this situation may hinge on the specifics of the publishing agreement and the revenue threshold the game needs to reach for Bit Reactor to start earning from it. Despite the passage of weeks since the furloughs were announced, the situation remains unresolved.
