It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since Stardew Valley first launched and transformed the cozy gaming genre, but developer Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone isn’t finished yet – the 1.7 update is in the works, featuring new marriage candidates and more.

In a recent chat, ConcernedApe shared that he prefers to keep details under wraps for the sake of surprise. He confirmed that two new marriage candidates are on the way but kept their identities a secret.

Fans will have to wait until the anniversary on February 26 to learn who these new characters are. Naturally, excitement is building, and the community is buzzing with theories about potential new romance options.

One Reddit thread has users speculating that one of the new candidates will “definitely” be Sandy, the clerk from the Oasis store. The comments range from humorous suggestions (“Mr. Qi and the Auto Petter”) to more serious theories, with many agreeing that Sandy is a strong possibility.

Some fans are also considering Sandy and the Wizard, drawing inspiration from games that influenced Stardew Valley. “If you’ve played the Harvest Moon games,” one user noted, “you know there are ‘hidden’ bachelors and bachelorettes. Characters who aren’t initially romanceable but can be once you meet certain conditions. The Wizard and Sandy give me those vibes.”

Other guesses include Clint (who I personally find annoying), Gus, Gunther, and Marnie – though her complicated relationship with the mayor might complicate things.

In another discussion about the upcoming marriage candidates, one fan expressed a desire for something fresh: “I hope it’s a new NPC instead of just existing ones becoming marriageable.” Now, that would be exciting.

I’d love to see a new character, and it seems I’m not alone. One fan chimed in, “It’ll probably be Sandy and Clint, but new characters would be awesome.” We’ll have to wait for the Stardew Valley anniversary later this month, but I’m definitely hoping for a classic ConcernedApe surprise. Can you imagine Mr. Qi living on your farm? Just wild dreams, right?
