Starfield’s Major Update Enhances Every Aspect of the Game

Bethesda Game Studios revealed on Tuesday that Starfield will launch on PlayStation 5 on April 7, accompanied by a significant story expansion and a price reduction. However, the standout feature of this update is the Free Lanes expansion, touted as Starfield’s “largest update since its release.”

Set to debut on April 7, Free Lanes introduces a host of enhancements that players have been clamoring for since 2023. During a recent preview, Starfield’s lead creative producer, Tim Lamb, provided an in-depth look at the changes coming with this update. Here’s a quick rundown of the most exciting additions:

One of the key points Lamb emphasized is that while this update is substantial, it’s not a complete overhaul. “I wouldn’t call it [Starfield] 2.0,” he noted. “There’s a certain narrative tied to that term. We’ve focused on various systems based on community feedback and aimed to enhance multiple aspects of the game.”

Since its launch, a common critique has been that Starfield, despite its space exploration theme, felt somewhat confined. Much of the travel was limited to navigating through menus, and the inability to pilot your ship directly between planets broke the immersion of being an interstellar captain.

Free Lanes addresses this concern head-on. It introduces a mechanic reminiscent of Skyrim’s “if you can see that mountain, you can walk to it,” but applied to planets. Players can now select a planet within a star system and fly their ship there in real time. Your ship accelerates to a speed that makes interplanetary travel seamless. You can set your ship on autopilot and move around inside it—crafting, chatting with crew members, or even enjoying a snack—while en route to your destination. During these travels, you might encounter random anomalies like asteroid fields or derelict ships, which can yield rare loot, including a new resource called X-Tech.

For those who enjoy crafting, X-Tech adds a new layer of complexity. This resource, which Lamb mentioned will appear in various locations, particularly in boss chests, can be used to enhance your ship’s attributes (like shield strength and weapon power) and customize weapon perks. With Free Lanes, you can apply up to four ranks of legendary modifiers to your weapons, reroll perks, and after five attempts, choose any attribute you desire. Lamb demonstrated this by customizing an SMG to fire explosive rounds with an extended clip and increased fire rate, enhanced by a perk that occasionally tripled the clip size.

Bethesda is also enhancing the permanence of loot by expanding the functionality of the Quantum Essence resource. The Free Lanes update will allow players to bring items through the Unity—an endgame event that resets much of your progress—using a new feature called the Quantum Entanglement Device. This means if you acquire an SMG that fires unlimited rockets, you can store it in the device, allowing you to keep your hard-earned loot while still engaging with the cyclical nature of Starfield’s narrative. You can upgrade the device’s capacity to hold up to 200 items using Quantum Essence.

Additionally, Quantum Essence will now enable direct upgrades to your Starborn powers from the powers menu, eliminating the need to traverse numerous temples just to marginally enhance your gravitational abilities.

“We heard from players that it was a hassle to go through the Unity and the temples repeatedly to power up Starborn abilities,” Lamb explained.

In response to player feedback, Maria Hughes—a scientist NPC involved in the crucial “Entangled” mission—will now be a recruitable party member in Free Lanes. The update will also introduce new crew members, including a “Model G” robot, which, while not useful in combat, adds a bit of charm to your crew.

And let’s not forget the adorable Milliwhale pet, a reward from a quest in Free Lanes. While it won’t accompany you in battle, it will hang out at your outpost, adding some positive vibes.

The Free Lanes update will also introduce two new travel options within the Settled Systems. The first is the Moon Jumper vehicle, which builds on the land buggies added in a 2024 update to address player concerns about traversing large planetary expanses. The Moon Jumper features a “crazy boost capacity,” allowing it to function like a hovercraft.

The second addition is a straightforward quality-of-life improvement: players can now save their favorite fast-travel locations, eliminating the need to navigate through multiple menus to return to places like Jemison.

One new location that will likely become a favorite is the asteroid base. Lamb acknowledged that Starfield has been missing an “aspirational” item. Throughout a completionist playthrough, players can accumulate vast amounts of credits, but there hasn’t been much to spend that wealth on. The new home base, located within an abandoned asteroid, is described by Lamb as a “Bond villain chic” space mansion, complete with a gym, greenhouse atrium, ship hangar, and stunning views. It’s undoubtedly the most luxurious residence in Starfield, though the price tag remains a mystery.

The Free Lanes update for Starfield is set to launch on April 7 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
