Steam Breaks Concurrent Player Record Over the Weekend
The gaming console market may be struggling, but Steam is thriving. Recent data reveals that Valve’s digital storefront set a new record for concurrent players, surpassing 43.5 million users on Sunday. Among them, over 14 million were actively gaming at the same time, marking another record high. This achievement follows a previous peak of 42 million concurrent users earlier this year in January.
Steam’s player base has steadily increased over its 23-year journey, but it faced a significant challenge in early 2020 when the World Health Organization announced the COVID-19 pandemic. Remarkably, the platform has rebounded since then, with its peak concurrent player count nearly doubling in the last six years.
The latest surge in player numbers can be attributed to popular titles like Counter-Strike 2, which peaked at 1.4 million players in 24 hours, Dota 2 with 1 million, and PUBG: Battlegrounds at 713,683. Newcomer Aion 2, which launched on October 5, has already reached an impressive peak of 397,905 players. Additionally, Valve’s own game Deadlock has made waves, hitting an all-time high of 262,145 concurrent players following its September 30 patch, even though it hasn’t officially launched yet.
The past couple of months have been packed with exciting game releases, featuring standout single-player titles like Star Wars Galactic Racer and Ace Combat 8, among others.
While the PC gaming scene continues to flourish, console sales have hit a rough patch. Ongoing shortages of RAM and other hardware components have driven up console prices and hampered sales. Reports indicate that Xbox hardware sales dropped by 33% year-to-date in August compared to the same time last year, while PlayStation sales fell by 25%.
It’s surprising that Steam’s growth remains unaffected by these hardware challenges, especially as prices for computer parts have skyrocketed in recent years, making graphics cards and other components hard to find. Gamers may be sticking with their pre-crisis setups, but one thing is clear: Valve is navigating these turbulent times successfully.
There’s likely some interesting dynamics at play with TBH: Task Bar Hero.
