Steam Breaks New Record with Over 42 Million Concurrent Players
Just a week after achieving its last record, Steam has reached a new peak of 42,042,778 concurrent players, surpassing the 42 million mark for the first time on January 11. The platform has experienced consistent growth in recent years, with record highs becoming increasingly common. Although Steam has been around for over two decades, its popularity has surged, particularly in the six years since the Covid-19 pandemic was declared. The average number of concurrent users on Steam has more than doubled compared to pre-pandemic levels, and the growth rate has accelerated.
Analysis indicates that Steam’s growth rate before the pandemic was approximately 4.5% annually, which skyrocketed to an impressive 31.5% in 2020 due to global lockdowns, later stabilizing at around 13% in subsequent years. Reports show that Steam’s revenue is also on the rise, with December 2025 marking its highest revenue month for that time of year, likely fueled by recent standout titles like Arc Raiders and the indie sensation Peak.
Steam continues to outpace its competitor, which has seen user growth through free game promotions but has struggled to maintain a similar revenue trajectory. However, another gaming giant, Roblox, still leads in peak concurrent users, having set an all-time record of 47.3 million players in August, thanks to a viral competition between popular games Grow a Garden and Steal a Brainrot. Despite this, Steam maintains a higher average concurrent player count than Roblox, which currently sits below 20 million according to tracking data. With new hardware from Valve on the way, including an updated Steam Machine and the Steam Frame VR headset, Steam’s growth trajectory shows no signs of slowing down.
