“Steam Developer Pulls Game After Discovering Flaws in AI”

AI in gaming is a hot topic, and one developer is taking a bold stand by removing their game entirely rather than dealing with the ethical implications. Hardest, a free-to-play roguelike that hit Steam in the summer of 2025, boasted a quirky tagline: “stop time, summon tsunamis, shoot with bubble guns, feed cards to mimic, collect rare negative cards!” Despite a few positive comments, including one player who found it a bonding experience with his son, the game mostly faced criticism, with one reviewer dismissing it as “AI slop.”

You might think that a poor reception would spell the end for Hardest, but six months later, developer Rakuel had a change of heart. On January 10, he announced plans to remove the game from Steam by the end of the month.

In his announcement, Rakuel shared that he created Hardest in just a couple of months with the help of AI, initially believing it was harmless. Encouraged by those around him, he saw the free tools as a gateway to endless possibilities.

However, after starting a new relationship, Rakuel began to reconsider his stance on AI-generated content. Although their relationship is still fresh, his partner has opened his eyes to the potential downsides of using AI in game development.

“I’ve come to realize that AI isn’t actually free, and it significantly impacts the economy and environment,” Rakuel explained. He expressed concern that the existence of his game could be leveraged by AI companies to attract investment, ultimately draining resources from hardworking individuals. He even admitted to feeling “brainwashed” by peers who frequently used AI.

Rakuel views this change as a valuable lesson rather than a setback. He noted that he did write some of the code for Hardest himself and feels confident about creating a new game with original art in the future.

“But having the game out there in its current state feels like a disservice to all game developers and players,” he stated. “Ethically, the only reasonable action is to remove the game from Steam. My girlfriend helped me see this.”

For now, Hardest is still available for download, and players can check it out before Rakuel takes it down. Once it’s removed, it will stay in your library until you decide to delete it, and the developer might even encourage you to do so.
