Steam Machines Could Offer Valve Fans Expanded Choices
The Steam Controller is already in the hands of some excited fans, making the anticipation for the Steam Machine’s launch and pricing even more intense. While we still await concrete answers, there are a few promising indicators that an announcement could be on the horizon.
In early May, reports emerged that a massive shipment of 50 tons of gaming consoles arrived at Valve’s facilities over just a few days. While the exact contents remain a mystery, it’s safe to assume that Valve didn’t just stockpile every Wii U in existence. Given the size and weight of the shipment, it strongly suggests that Valve is gearing up for a significant release of Steam Machines. Somewhere, a scalper is likely feeling a chill.
Recently, data miners have uncovered references to four different Steam Machine models in the backend code of Steam updates, along with two models of the Steam Frame, Valve’s upcoming VR headset. This information appears to be linked to a reservation system similar to the one used for the Steam Controller after its initial sellout. The reservation process was straightforward, hinting that securing a Steam Machine could be just as easy.
As for the variety of models, we can expect a range of storage options, much like the Steam Deck, which offered configurations from 256 GB to 1 TB. Since the Steam Machine is designed to function like a console, it will need to accommodate large game file sizes. While Valve could surprise us, there’s no indication that the Steam Machine will feature drastically different functionalities across models. Some potential buyers have speculated that Valve might bundle the Steam Deck with a Steam Controller, which could explain the variety of options.
Valve has been tight-lipped about pricing, but the consensus is that the Steam Machine will likely come with a hefty price tag. With the rising costs of PC components, models with over 1 TB of storage are expected to be particularly expensive, although Valve has expressed a desire for the Steam Machine to be “affordable.”
Until Valve officially reveals more details, we can only guess what’s in store.
