Steam Machines from Valve Are Being Resold at Sky-High Prices
Valve has implemented several strategies to curb the scalping of the Steam Machine, including requiring an active Steam account in good standing and using a randomized lottery system for pre-order registrations. However, no system is foolproof. Over the past few days, successful registrants have been receiving emails, with the first shipments starting today. Yet, as noted, pre-orders are already appearing on eBay at significantly inflated prices.
Thanks to these measures, the situation isn’t as chaotic as the Steam Controller launch, but eBay listings show a considerable number of pre-orders for the Steam Machines. For instance, a 2TB Steam Machine without a controller has been sold for $2,899, more than double its original price of $1,349. Meanwhile, live listings for the 512GB version with a controller, which has a list price of $1,128, are going for an astonishing $3,200.
The average selling price for the 512GB version is around $1,500, allowing those flipping their pre-orders to make a decent profit, with some even reaching $2,000. The 2TB version has seen fewer resales, but prices are climbing to $2,500 and beyond.
It’s important to note that these listings are for the pre-orders themselves, not the actual Steam Machines. It will be interesting to see if buyers encounter any issues due to the requirement of having a matching Steam account.
Official registrations for the Steam Machine are open again, but the likelihood of securing one by 2026 seems slim. With component prices expected to potentially double before the year ends, the cost is only set to rise.
