Stranger Things Creators Explain the Twist Between Nancy and Jonathan
It’s not uncommon for TV shows to feature a “will-they-or-won’t-they” dynamic, but *Stranger Things* has taken it a step further with a “did-they-or-didn’t-they” moment that has left fans scratching their heads. In volume 2 of season 5, Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) found themselves facing a dire situation, and emotions were running high. In that intense moment, Jonathan asked Nancy not to marry him, and she agreed.
So, what does this mean for their relationship? Social media lit up with opinions, with some fans convinced that their story wasn’t over. However, the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, have clarified that it is indeed finished.
“That’s a breakup,” Matt Duffer stated, addressing the confusion among viewers. “They are broken up.” For the writers, this felt like a natural progression, especially for Nancy, who has demonstrated her strength and independence.
Ross Duffer mentioned that the decision stemmed from a desire for Nancy to explore her individuality. “It’s hard to recall when exactly that idea came, but I think us — and the writers — all felt that Nancy needed to end up on her own and be independent and have an opportunity to find herself.” He also noted that their relationship was more of “a trauma bond” than a healthy romance.
While this may not be the resolution some fans hoped for, there’s still a chance for other characters to find their happy endings. The looming question, however, is who will survive until the end. With the finale confirmed to run over two hours, there’s plenty of time for the stakes to rise and for the body count to increase as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and her friends face their ultimate challenges. We’ll have to wait and see how it all unfolds when the final episode of *Stranger Things* drops on Netflix this New Year’s Eve.
