Stranger Things’ Epic Final Battle Draws Inspiration from Baldur’s Gate 3
The finale of season five of Stranger Things culminates in an epic showdown featuring the series’ key characters, and the creative minds behind the show have revealed that this climactic battle drew inspiration from Baldur’s Gate 3.
Last week, on New Year’s Eve, Stranger Things concluded its nearly decade-long run with a thrilling two-hour finale. While some fans expressed dissatisfaction with the ending and are speculating about a potential bonus episode, the final installment did showcase a significant confrontation involving Vecna, the Mind Flayer, and many beloved characters.
In a recent interview, the Duffer brothers, the creators of the series, shared that the intense boss fight was influenced by their experiences playing Baldur’s Gate 3.
“We were thinking about D&D, and I was playing Baldur’s Gate 3 while crafting the finale,” Matt Duffer explained. “It was crucial for us that the only way to defeat the enemy was for the entire party to unite. Each character had to fully embrace themselves or resolve their personal issues before entering that final battle, making them the ultimate team. It’s all about the party working together to take down this formidable foe, each bringing their unique skills to the table. This concept ties back to Dungeons & Dragons and games like Baldur’s Gate, where teamwork is essential to overcoming seemingly invincible monsters.”
Swen Vincke, the head of the studio behind Baldur’s Gate 3, expressed his excitement about this revelation, sharing it on Twitter with a simple, “That’s pretty cool.”
Matt Duffer also mentioned that “numerous video game references were woven into that final battle,” though he didn’t provide specific details. Additionally, the Duffers acknowledged the fan theories suggesting that the “true” finale is still to come, responding with, “Obviously, that’s not a real thing.”
