Stranger Things Fans Seek Closure as Series Finale Leaves Key Questions Unanswered
After five seasons spanning nearly a decade, Stranger Things has wrapped up its story. However, following the action-packed finale that clocked in at over two hours, some fans are left feeling a bit unsatisfied, as numerous questions remain unanswered.
Spoiler alert: the following discussion contains details from Stranger Things season 5 episode 8, so make sure you’re caught up before diving in.
The season 5 finale, titled ‘The Righside Up,’ showcased our beloved Hawkins heroes triumphing over Vecna. After this climactic battle, the narrative jumps ahead 18 months, revealing how Will, Mike, and the rest of the gang are faring post-Henry Creel’s defeat.
Despite the resolution of the main conflict, fans have noted a plethora of lingering questions after the series finale. With no spin-offs centered on Hawkins in the pipeline, there’s a growing concern that fans may never receive the closure they seek. One fan took to social media to compile a list of unresolved issues, such as the fate of Dr. Kay, the whereabouts of Max’s mom, the status of Robin and Vickie’s relationship, and the mystery of who opened the door when the demogorgon was pursuing Will back in season 1.
Another fan pointed out that many of the so-called ‘plotholes’ could be explained or simply aren’t significant enough to warrant on-screen resolution. Yet, the inquiries keep piling up, with one fan noting, “Demogorgons, Demodogs, and bats just vanish. What happened to Owens, Argyle, and Dmitri? The bizarre time loop in the Upside Down was never clarified. What’s the deal with the Russian lab and its involvement?”
Additionally, there’s some ambiguity regarding the show’s connection to the play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow. This stage production takes us back to the ’50s, where Joyce Byers, Jim Hopper, and the Wheelers attended school with Henry Creel, yet this is never mentioned in the series. Speaking of Creel, aka Vecna, fans are still puzzled about his intentions with the twelve children. “Did they ever explain why Henry needed TWELVE KIDS to merge the worlds??” questioned one viewer.
This could all boil down to the idea that viewers know as much as Will, Mike, and the others do. The creators have mentioned that they intentionally kept the main show and the play somewhat separate, as not every fan has seen the stage adaptation. Nevertheless, fans continue to uncover more inconsistencies.
The entire Stranger Things series is currently available for streaming.
