Stranger Things Makes a Comeback on Netflix with a Special Edition Release

Netflix has just released a remastered version of the first season of *Stranger Things*, giving the beloved sci-fi horror series a fresh, ’80s-inspired aesthetic. For subscribers who might be hesitant about upgrading to the streaming service’s premium 4K plan, the new *Stranger Things: VHS Special Edition* makes a compelling argument against it.

Launched to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Duffer Brothers’ creation, which first hit Netflix on July 15, 2016, this special edition takes nostalgia to the next level by incorporating VHS-style video effects across the first eight episodes.

“Rewind and relive the first season with a video store vibe that’s glitchy, grainy, and gloriously vintage — just like you’d have rented it in 1983,” reads the official description of *Stranger Things: VHS Special Edition*. The remaster also features a 4:3 aspect ratio, emulating the classic TV format of the era.

Alongside the release of the *VHS Special Edition*, Netflix has unveiled a new poster by longtime series artist Kyle Lambert to mark the show’s milestone anniversary.

Since its debut in 2016, *Stranger Things* quickly became a standout hit for the platform. Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, this coming-of-age sci-fi horror series draws heavily from ’80s influences, including the works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Stephen King, and Wes Craven, with a touch of H. P. Lovecraft’s otherworldly horrors.

Over its run from 2016 to 2025, Netflix released five seasons of *Stranger Things*, culminating in a climactic series finale on December 31, 2025. The highly anticipated conclusion was screened in theaters as well as on the streaming service, providing closure for fans, though reactions to the fifth season—especially its final two episodes—were mixed.

While *Stranger Things* has officially wrapped up, Netflix is set to expand the franchise with spinoffs, including the ongoing animated series *Stranger Things: Tales from ’85* and the stage play *Stranger Things: The First Shadow*, which will also be available on Netflix. The Duffer Brothers have hinted at a live-action spinoff featuring entirely new characters, a new town, and a fresh mythology, though it’s uncertain if this will proceed now that they are collaborating with Paramount.

Fans can look forward to another release later this month, as Arrow Video and Netflix prepare to launch *Stranger Things: The Complete Series* on 4K UHD and Blu-ray. However, details on a full-series VHS release remain under wraps.
