Studio Ghibli Films to Screen in Stunning 4K at IMAX in 2026

Studio Ghibli classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Howl’s Moving Castle are set to dazzle audiences once again with a theatrical re-release in stunning 4K quality.

GKids and IMAX are teaming up to bring these beloved films to IMAX theaters across North America starting in 2026. This initiative builds on the success of the 4K release of Princess Mononoke, which became the second-highest-grossing vault release in IMAX history earlier in 2025.

The 4K restorations promise an enhanced cinematic experience, featuring superior sound and visuals that far surpass what you might have at home. With Studio Ghibli’s Atsushi Okui overseeing the restorations, GKids and IMAX will handle the distribution, likely making these films exclusive to IMAX theaters initially.

Details about which IMAX locations will participate and the order of the 4K Studio Ghibli releases are still under wraps. However, the announcement hints at “multiple Studio Ghibli titles” beyond 2026, suggesting fans can expect more than just one film. Given that Princess Mononoke has already been treated to a 4K upgrade, other Ghibli favorites like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro are strong contenders for the lineup.

For those outside North America, there’s hope: Princess Mononoke’s 4K restoration eventually made its way to other countries, including the UK, Ireland, France, and the Netherlands, so similar releases for future 4K Studio Ghibli films could follow.
