One of the most talked-about features missing from the original Subnautica was multiplayer, but the developers have made it clear that Subnautica 2 will introduce co-op gameplay. While there were concerns about whether this would detract from the solitary exploration that defined the first game, a recent developer diary has eased those worries.

Design lead Anthony Gallegos confirmed that “no part of the game will require cooperative play.” He emphasized that players can invite friends to join them without compromising the solo experience. “We never wanted to force players into situations where they had to work together to progress. It’s all about optional co-op from start to finish.”

This aligns with the developers’ earlier statement that Subnautica 2 is primarily a single-player experience, but it’s clear that multiplayer has been a core element since the early stages of development. Lead engineer Jon Bjarnason noted that “every single feature we’ve implemented since then has been designed with multiplayer in mind.”

Players can easily switch a single-player session to multiplayer or create a multiplayer world from the get-go. Full crossplay is available through an in-game friends list, and invites can also be sent via your platform’s friends list. “It’s really straightforward to continue games with friends or let them pick up where you left off,” Gallegos explained.

While these features may seem standard, many sequels have stumbled over what should be simple enhancements. Despite ongoing legal issues between Krafton and the original Subnautica 2 team, it appears the current developers are committed to preserving the essence of what made Subnautica a standout title.

These are the best survival games out there.
