Supergirl Artwork Features Unexpected Star Wars Character in Odd Crossover
In a surprising blunder from a major studio, an obscure character from the Star Wars universe has made an unexpected appearance in promotional art for the upcoming Supergirl movie. This mix-up raises eyebrows, but the reason behind the inclusion of a lesser-known alien from the Star Wars sequels in Supergirl’s marketing might be straightforward.
Recently, a new collection was announced for the official online shop, showcasing a “curated selection of limited-edition art, apparel, and collectibles” featuring Bilquis Evely’s artwork from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, along with designs inspired by the film. Among these items is a print titled “Across the Galaxy,” which showcases Evely’s artwork of Kara Zor-El (Supergirl), Ruthye Marye Knoll, and a variety of alien characters they encounter on their journey.
Curiously, one of these aliens resembles Lexo Sooger from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The character in question is actually meant to be Screecher, an alien set to appear in Supergirl who bears a passing resemblance to Lexo Sooger.
You might be wondering, “Who exactly is Lexo Sooger?” According to lore, Lexo Sooger was a male Dor Namethian who worked as a star masseur at Zord’s Spa and Bathhouse in Canto Bight, and he had a past as an assassin. This probably doesn’t clarify much for those not well-versed in the depths of Star Wars trivia, as Lexo Sooger only briefly appeared in a deleted scene from The Last Jedi. In an early version of the film, Rose and Finn escape Canto Bight on a Fathier and pass through Zord’s Spa, where Lexo is seen giving a massage.
For those intrigued by Star Wars lore, more about Lexo Sooger’s unique skills can be found in the anthology book, Canto Bight.
As for Screecher, details are scarce, but they will feature in Supergirl, and Lobo actor Jason Momoa was recently spotted with them. You can catch a glimpse of Momoa and Screecher promoting Supergirl tickets in a recent Instagram reel.
So, how did this unusual crossover between DC Comics and Star Wars occur? One plausible theory suggests that the mix-up stems from Hanlon’s razor: someone at DC may have inadvertently provided artist Bilquis Evely with the wrong reference material. Lexo Sooger and Screecher share similar body types, skin tones, and fashion styles, and it’s possible that Screecher’s design was even inspired by Star Wars aliens.
Efforts to get a comment from DC regarding this mix-up are underway, and updates will follow once a response is received. As of now, the $119.95 Supergirl “Across the Galaxy” metal print remains available for purchase, and Evely has yet to address the situation.
This isn’t the first time such an error has occurred. A few years back, Marvel Comics nearly published a variant cover for Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man that featured a character not from the Marvel universe. The artist Bengal mistakenly included Spinnerette from a satirical webcomic instead of Marvel’s Spinneret, leading to the character’s removal from the cover art.
Supergirl is set to hit theaters on June 26, but don’t expect to see Lexo Sooger making an appearance. It’s superhero summer, after all!
