Supergirl’s composer switch hints at the film’s tone and atmosphere.

Supergirl is set to soar into theaters on June 26, but it looks like the DC Universe film has undergone a significant change. A recent update to the film’s IMDb page indicates that original composer Ramin Djawadi has been replaced by Tom Holkenborg. While this might not seem like a big deal at first, a deeper dive into the two composers and their styles suggests it could lead to a notable shift in the film’s overall vibe under director Craig Gillespie.

Ramin Djawadi is known for his work on various films and series, particularly for the iconic opening themes of Game of Thrones and Westworld, which feature epic and somber melodies that capture the emotional depth of their narratives. His impressive portfolio also includes scores for Iron Man, Pacific Rim, The Eternals, and the 2026 AI-thriller Mercy.

On the other hand, Holkenborg, also known as Junkie XL, has made a name for himself as a favorite among directors like Zack Snyder. He contributed to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice alongside Hans Zimmer and crafted the original score for Justice League. Although he was replaced by Danny Elfman in the theatrical cut, Snyder brought him back for his “Snyder Cut.” Holkenborg’s credits extend to the Rebel Moon films and Army of the Dead, along with being George Miller’s go-to composer for Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Three Thousand Years of Longing, as well as all three Sonic movies. He’s also known for the viral electronic remix of Elvis’s “A Little Less Conversation.”

What does this all mean for Supergirl? It’s hard to say for sure, but Holkenborg’s body of work suggests a more explosive and dynamic approach. His scores tend to lack the subtlety that often characterizes Djawadi’s best compositions. This change seems to align with the action-packed tone hinted at in Supergirl’s first trailer, which evokes a blend of sci-fi action and humor reminiscent of the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

While Djawadi’s style may have suited the original source material—Tom King’s and Bilquis Evely’s epic comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow—it’s possible that as the film’s tone evolved, DC Studios decided Holkenborg was a better match. However, this remains speculation for now. We’ll have to wait for the film and its score to drop to see how it all plays out.

Supergirl hits theaters on June 26.
