Supergirl’s Woman of Tomorrow Adaptation in the Works Following Box Office Setback
Director Craig Gillespie and writer Ana Nogueira’s interpretation of Supergirl may not have set the box office ablaze, but it certainly offered an engaging superhero narrative. Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Kara Zor-El had a rocky start, with its opening weekend performance drawing comparisons to the less-than-favorable reception of Joker 2.
However, Supergirl fans have reason to celebrate, as this fall brings an exciting new project. DC is teaming up with Penguin Random House Audio to launch a full-cast audiobook adaptation of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the comic that served as a key inspiration for Gillespie’s film, despite some noticeable differences. This eight-issue series will be transformed into an audio experience featuring a talented cast, immersive sound effects, and original music.
Woman of Tomorrow explores Kara Zor-El’s inner turmoil following the destruction of her home planet and her struggle to find her place on Earth, unlike her cousin Clark. The story takes a turn when Ruthye, an alien girl whose family falls victim to the ruthless pirate Krem of the Yellow Hills, seeks Kara’s assistance, giving Supergirl an opportunity to carve out her own identity.
Marcella Lentz-Pope, known for her role as Corrin in the Fire Emblem series, will voice Supergirl. She previously appeared in a DC production, portraying Vera in the animated film Superman vs The Elite. Joining her is Amelia Tyler, recognized for her work in Baldur’s Gate 3, who will narrate as Ruthye, along with Lim Shi-An as a young Ruthye, Jon Bailey as Krem and Krypto, Marc Thompson as Zor-El, Ellen Adair as Alura, and Tan Kheng Hua as Ruthye’s mother.
The audiobook is directed and produced by Roshan Singh Sambhi, who has made a name for himself as a co-showrunner of DC Comics’ audio drama DC High Volume: Batman.
“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is one of the most ornately beautiful pieces of sequential storytelling ever put to page,” Singh Sambhi remarked, “and this audio adaptation is our love letter to it. We’ve faithfully studied every panel to build a theater of the mind, an operatic daydream that sits differently in each listener’s imagination, treating a flame-empowered Supergirl fighting a crystalline space dragon with the same care as her teaching a bewildered little girl how to wash her hands.”
Fans can dive into this audio adventure when the audiobook of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow launches on September 1.
