Surprise Cameo in “It: Welcome to Derry” Alters Key Pennywise Scene from “It: Chapter Two,” Reveals Showrunner

In “It: Welcome to Derry,” co-showrunner Jason Fuchs reveals that the unexpected cameo from the Losers Club in episode 8 wasn’t part of the initial script, but it adds a chilling layer to a pivotal moment in “It: Chapter Two.”

**Spoiler Alert: This contains spoilers for episode 8 of “It: Welcome to Derry.”**

Fuchs, who penned episode 8, explains that the cameo was a last-minute addition. “That scene came about in reshoots. Reshoots are standard for any major show or film, but we were nearing the end of production. We had discussed how to incorporate one more element that would connect us to the films. We already had the Rich Tozier missing kids poster, but we wanted another piece to bridge the gap and make it feel like we were stepping right up to the doorstep of ‘It: Chapter One.'”

The cameo features Sophia Lillis reprising her role as Beverly Marsh, who is seen distraught on the floor of a hospital room at Juniper Hill, looking up at her mother, who has tragically taken her own life. The season finale jumps forward 27 years to an elderly Ingrid Kersh, who, despite her dark past of causing the deaths of over 20 Black residents in Derry, initially appears as a sweet old lady. However, this facade quickly fades when she hears a disturbance and cheerfully investigates, discovering Beverly on the floor next to her abusive father. As Beverly looks up in tears, Ingrid ominously states, “No one ever really dies in Derry.”

In “It: Chapter Two,” Pennywise takes on the form of an elderly woman named “Mrs. Kersh” to torment adult Beverly, exploiting her deepest fears related to her father’s abuse. Fuchs notes that this new context reveals that Mrs. Kersh is not just a random disguise for Pennywise but is tied to Beverly’s most traumatic experience—the day her mother died.

Fuchs elaborates, “This changes the context of that scene in ‘It: Chapter Two.’ Now we understand that Pennywise’s guise is not solely about tormenting Beverly regarding her father; it also taps into a deeply repressed trauma linked to Mrs. Kersh, the person she encountered on the day of her mother’s tragic suicide.”
