Surprise Dragon’s Dogma 2 DLC Revealed During Nintendo Direct

I doubt anyone had “Dragon’s Dogma 2 gets a full expansion” on their Nintendo Direct bingo cards today. The game has been out for over two years, and Capcom hasn’t hinted at giving Dragon’s Dogma 2 the same kind of love it showed the original with its Dark Arisen expansion. But here we are, and they’re even calling this new expansion “Dark Arisen,” which could be a playful nod or a sign that it will echo the beloved features of the first game’s expansion.

I’m a huge fan of Dragon’s Dogma 2, so I’m thrilled about this news. However, after checking my save file, I’m a bit concerned about how much effort it’ll take to dive back in.

For those who might not remember, Dragon’s Dogma 2 only allows for a single save file. When you load the game, you can either continue from your last save or from the last inn where you rested. That’s it—there’s no option to save and then undo decisions if you mess up. This limitation is part of what makes the game so engaging; it’s filled with intense moments, including devastating diseases and character deaths, and being able to save-scum would diminish the impact of those experiences.

However, the introduction of DLC complicates things. We don’t have all the details on the new Dark Arisen DLC yet, but the official posts indicate it will introduce a new region with fresh characters, dungeons, weapons, and skills. That sounds awesome! I’m eager to explore! The catch is that we don’t know how to access this new area or if there are level or story prerequisites to get there. In many games, this wouldn’t be a big deal for players like me who finished the game a while back, as we could just load up a late-game save and jump right in.

But in Dragon’s Dogma 2, it’s a different story. I won’t spoil anything, but there’s a crucial point of no return near the end of the game that, once crossed, leaves you in a situation that isn’t ideal for exploring a new continent. Once you reach that point, there’s no going back; the only way to return to the original world state is to start a brand new game. With only one save file, if you’ve passed that point (which you would have to do to see the true ending), you’re stuck.

Capcom has a few options to address this, and it seems they’re trying to make it easier for returning players. New Game+ lets you start again at the same level you finished the game, with access to high-level pawns and all your previous abilities. You could jump into New Game+ and rush to the new content. However, even that can be time-consuming. Dragon’s Dogma 2 lacks fast travel outside of portcrystals, which require ferrystones—limited consumables that don’t carry over to your new save. So, you’ll still need to traverse the map and likely complete some quests you’ve already done just to reach the new area. This might not bother hardcore fans who replay the game multiple times, but for someone like me who prefers a single playthrough, it’s frustrating.

In the lead-up to the Dark Arisen release, Capcom is rolling out several quality-of-life improvements, including enhancements to fast travel and movement, as well as vague “save system improvements,” which could hint at multiple save files—though that doesn’t help me right now. The DLC will also introduce new customization options for both players and Pawns, along with new Arena dungeons scattered throughout the existing world to make revisiting familiar places more engaging. Capcom is clearly making an effort. Ideally, they would make the DLC accessible early in the game for players who know where to go and are leveled up enough to handle it, perhaps with an easy transport option. But for now, I’m eyeing my New Game+ file with skepticism, wondering if it’s worth the hassle.

Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Dark Arisen DLC is set to launch on October 9, coinciding with the game’s release on Nintendo Switch 2. It will be included in the Switch 2 edition and available as a separate paid expansion on other platforms. Quality-of-life updates are scheduled for June 10, with more improvements coming at the end of August to help streamline your New Game+ experience leading up to the DLC. So, gear up for a journey to the frozen north, as long as it doesn’t require another 60+ hours of gameplay to get there.
