The latest PlayStation State of Play has just dropped, revealing exciting content for this year and beyond, including a surprising shadow drop: a 2D God of War spin-off titled Sons of Sparta. While the remake of the God of War Greek trilogy is thrilling, Sons of Sparta offers a fresh and unique experience. According to Sony’s blog, this 2D action platformer explores Kratos’ early years as he trains at the Agoge alongside his brother, Deimos. Although it looks different from the main series, the story remains fully canonical.

God of War Sons of Sparta is available now on PS5 through the official PlayStation Store, with the standard edition priced at $29.99 and a digital deluxe version at $39.99. The deluxe edition includes a digital artbook, soundtrack, and a PlayStation Network avatar of a serious-looking young Kratos.

In terms of gameplay, Kratos will wield his iconic spear and shield while utilizing powerful divine artifacts known as the “Gifts of Olympus” to battle various formidable enemies. Sony describes this new 2D title as featuring “stunning hand-drawn pixel animation” and the return of beloved classics, along with new creatures inspired by Greek mythology. With the original writing team from Santa Monica, who worked on God of War and Ragnarok, along with Mega Cat Studios, Sons of Sparta is sure to impress. And the best part? You can jump in and start playing right now on your PS5!
