Switch 2 OLED Speculation Grows Amid Price Increases

Reports indicate that Nintendo is in the early stages of developing an OLED version of the Switch 2, with expectations for a release around late 2027 or early 2028. This new model is said to maintain the same 1080p FHD resolution as the original Switch 2.

Sources suggest that the upgraded OLED screen will once again be produced by Samsung, which was responsible for the original Switch OLED’s 720p 7-inch display. There’s no confirmation on whether the new screen will be larger than the current 7.9 inches, but given the Switch 2’s design and minimal bezel, significant size increases seem unlikely.

In a typical scenario, this wouldn’t be shocking news. The original Switch launched in 2017, followed by an OLED variant in 2021, which reinvigorated interest in the console and prompted many to purchase the upgraded model for its superior display, despite similar underlying technology. With the current economic climate, it makes sense for Nintendo to avoid a lengthy wait for a new model. If development begins at the end of 2026 and mass production follows a year later, it would mean just under three years between models—plenty of time for those looking to upgrade.

However, the gaming landscape has shifted. Instead of seeing new, budget-friendly models, we’re witnessing older consoles experiencing price hikes. The ongoing component shortages have driven up production costs, and Nintendo recently raised prices on the Switch 2 less than a year post-launch. Thus, introducing a pricier version of the same console could be a risky endeavor.

That said, the Switch 2 already boasts a vibrant display that significantly outshines the original LCD model, making the need for an OLED upgrade less pressing. Still, if the OLED version delivers substantial improvements, it could be hard to resist.

Details on pricing for the new version remain unclear, which is expected since it’s not yet in active development. Nintendo is known for keeping a tight lid on information, often ignoring leaks. The Switch OLED was revealed just three months before its launch, so a similar timeline for announcements can be anticipated this time around.
