Sydney Sweeney Describes Live-Action Gundam Film as a Grand Action-Romance Adventure in Space
The live-action Gundam film has been in development since 2018, and while a director and cast have been announced, including notable names like Sydney Sweeney, specific details about the adaptation of the iconic mech anime have been scarce. However, one of the film’s stars is starting to shed some light on it.
In a recent appearance on a podcast, Noah Centineo, who stars in the film, described it as a “big action romance space movie.” He likened Gundam to “a non-Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet in space,” suggesting a narrative centered around star-crossed lovers caught in a generational conflict. This theme aligns well with the established Mobile Suit Gundam lore, which often explores the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon within the Universal Century timeline.
Centineo confirmed that the film will indeed take place in the Universal Century, a timeline that features many of the franchise’s most beloved shows and films, including the original series that kicked it all off. While the exact timeline setting for the live-action film remains unclear, concept art released in 2021 showcased the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam suit from the original series. This art was revealed when Jordan Vogt-Roberts was still attached as director, but he has since been replaced by Jim Mickle.
In addition to Centineo and Sweeney, the film will also feature familiar faces like Jason Isaacs and Michael Mando, among others. Although a release date has yet to be announced, filming wrapped up recently at the end of July. Gundam fans have plenty to be excited about, as alongside the live-action film, a new animated series titled Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is set to debut in 2027. Additionally, a game set in the same universe, Gundam Rogue Orbit, is scheduled for release next year.
Bandai Namco describes the game as a cinematic interpretation of the storied mech franchise.
