Taylor Sheridan is set to return for Sicario 3.

Taylor Sheridan has emerged as one of the most sought-after writers in television over the past decade, thanks to hits like Yellowstone, Landman, and Dutton Ranch. He’s also the mastermind behind three standout crime thrillers of the 2010s: Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River. After nearly ten years focused on TV and churning out Yellowstone seasons and spinoffs, Sheridan is gearing up to return to the film franchise that put him on the map.

Reports indicate that Sheridan is currently crafting the script for a third Sicario film, following earlier news that production is set to kick off soon.

The original Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve, is a gripping and intense look at the morally complex war on drugs along the U.S.-Mexico border. Released in 2015, the film features Emily Blunt as Kate Macer, a principled FBI agent recruited by the U.S. government to help take down a Mexican drug cartel leader, with the assistance of CIA agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and former Mexican prosecutor turned assassin Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro). Graver and Gillick operate in the shadows, withholding vital information from Macer, which creates a constant atmosphere of tension as violence looms over their covert operations.

Sheridan also penned a sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which hit theaters in 2018. Directed by Stefano Sollima, the sequel saw Brolin and del Toro reprise their roles. However, Day of the Soldado didn’t quite capture the same acclaim as its predecessor, missing Villeneuve’s unique touch and Roger Deakins’ Oscar-nominated cinematography.

The third installment, often referred to as Sicario: Capos, has been in the works since 2018. Brolin has confirmed his return for this new chapter and recently mentioned that production is expected to begin soon.

While it’s still uncertain who will join Brolin in Sicario 3, del Toro’s character made it through the events of Day of the Soldado, leaving the door open for his return. Villeneuve is currently busy wrapping up Dune Part Three, set to release in December, and is also attached to direct the next James Bond film, making his involvement in Sicario 3 unlikely.

In addition to Sicario, Sheridan is diving into another major project: Call of Duty. He’s working on the script for the adaptation of the iconic military shooter franchise, with Peter Berg set to direct. The highly anticipated Call of Duty movie is slated for release on June 30, 2028.

It’s shaping up to be an action-packed ride!
