TCL to Acquire Sony’s Television Division
Sony is set to transition its TV hardware division into a new joint venture with TCL, following a nonbinding agreement between the two companies. In this arrangement, TCL will take a 51 percent stake, while Sony will retain 49 percent.
This collaboration positions TCL to step into the premium television market, building on its recent technological advancements. If finalized, this deal would signify a significant shift for Sony, potentially leading to more affordable Bravia TVs that combine Sony’s renowned image processing with TCL’s cutting-edge technology.
Both companies aim to finalize binding agreements by the end of March, with plans to launch the new joint venture in April 2027, pending regulatory approvals and other conditions.
The new entity will continue to use the “Sony” and “Bravia” branding for its products and will oversee all global operations, including product development, design, manufacturing, sales, and logistics for TVs and home audio equipment. Sony plans to leverage its expertise in picture and audio technology, brand strength, and supply chain management, while integrating TCL’s display technology, robust supply chain, global reach, and cost efficiency.
In the announcement, Sony CEO Kimio Maki expressed that this partnership will enable both companies to “create new customer value in the home entertainment field, delivering even more captivating audio and visual experiences to customers worldwide.” TCL chairperson DU Juan added that the venture aims to “elevate our brand value, achieve greater scale, and optimize the supply chain to deliver superior products and services to our customers.”
