Teaser from Silent Hill 2 Remake Studio Hints at Something New, Not a Rule of Rose Revival

Last week, the developer behind the Silent Hill 2 remake, Bloober Team, unveiled a cryptic teaser site featuring a countdown clock set to end shortly after Valentine’s Day. While the purpose of this teaser remains unclear, a rose image on the site sparked speculation among horror enthusiasts that a remake of the PS2 cult classic Rule of Rose might be in the works. However, Bloober’s CEO quickly dashed those hopes.

“Nice guess, but no,” Bloober CEO Piotr Babieno stated on LinkedIn in response to the Rule of Rose rumors. “It definitely doesn’t refer to any remake.”

But could it hint at a different follow-up or revival related to Rule of Rose? Babieno clarified further, saying, “This is not in any way related to that brand.”

Originally released for the PS2 in 2006, Rule of Rose faced harsh criticism but is most infamous for inciting a moral panic prior to its launch. Disturbing descriptions of the game’s child characters led to calls for its ban from European officials, resulting in its release being canceled in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

Despite its flaws—or perhaps because of them—Rule of Rose has garnered a dedicated cult following, with fans praising its atmospheric visuals despite the clunky gameplay. Today, it’s a sought-after collector’s item, with complete US copies often fetching over $700 on the secondhand market.

Given the positive reception of Bloober’s Silent Hill 2 remake, it’s understandable that horror fans would cling to the rose imagery, hoping for a revival of a more obscure title. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The real mystery lies in what Bloober is actually developing. The teaser site features the message, “Some things never leave the walls. They only learn to wait,” accompanied by an eerie audio recitation of William Blake’s poem, The Sick Rose. Beyond that, we’ll have to wait for the countdown to conclude on February 15.

Bloober has several upcoming horror games in the pipeline, including a remake of Silent Hill 1 and a mysterious Nintendo-exclusive horror project currently dubbed Project M. Additionally, a title from Bloober’s subsidiary, Broken Mirror Games, is in development under the name Project F. Both of these projects are expected to be revealed this year.

Flaws and all, Rule of Rose remains one of the standout Japanese horror games in the genre.
