Teenage Engineering Unveils KO Sidekick: A Mixer Packed with Exciting Performance Effects

The EP-136 KO Sidekick is a sleek new two-channel mixer from Teenage Engineering, crafted to seamlessly connect two KO-II samplers for live performances and DJ sets. However, it’s versatile enough to link any two audio sources, not just TE gear. While there were some leaks about the mixer, they didn’t reveal its impressive capabilities as a robust effects processor, which brings some of TE’s favorite punch-in effects to any instrument you’re using.

By default, the EP-136 supports two stereo inputs but can be switched to accommodate four mono inputs with split audio adapters. It also features two stereo channels via USB-C, allowing you to control DJ apps on your phone or tablet. Each channel is equipped with a straightforward three-band EQ and a built-in compressor with three distinct modes. Although the Sidekick shares the same design aesthetic as the KO-II and connects directly using pegs, it moves away from the EP-133’s confusing icon interface in favor of a compact, high-resolution color LCD screen.

The standout feature of the KO Sidekick is its channel effects, which include six options: DJ filter, tremolo, delay, tape, loop, and siren. You can adjust the effect intensity using the mod stick or, similar to the KO-II, by applying pressure on the sensitive pad—the harder you press, the more pronounced the effect becomes. Additionally, you can automate effects to change over time without needing to keep your hand on the pad.

The Sidekick automatically detects the BPM of incoming audio, ensuring that rhythmic effects like tremolo remain in sync. Effects can be configured to run in series or parallel, allowing for combinations like having delay on channel one and tremolo on channel two, or stacking both effects for the master output.
