Terraria Ranks Among the All-Time Best-Selling Games
The 2D survival crafting game Terraria recently celebrated its 15th anniversary on May 16, and developer Re-Logic shared some impressive sales milestones to commemorate the event.
In a post on Steam, it was revealed that Terraria has sold a staggering 70 million copies. Out of that total, 39.6 million were sold on Steam alone. The console versions account for 10.7 million copies, while mobile sales reached 19.7 million. Re-Logic estimates that approximately 461,000 players log in daily on PC, with the average playtime for all Terraria players sitting at an impressive 101 hours and 18 minutes.
The modding community surrounding Terraria is also noteworthy, boasting a size that surpasses the player base of many other titles. The open-source tModLoader, which facilitates modding, has been downloaded 12.3 million times on Steam, and around 237,000 players engage with mods daily—making up just over half of the current daily player count.
Despite its seemingly simple appearance, Terraria’s sales figures are on par with some of the biggest names in the industry. It has outsold titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Pokémon Red & Blue, and it closely follows Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. However, it still trails behind Minecraft, which remains the top survival game.
In addition to the sales news, Re-Logic announced exciting updates for the game. Players can look forward to Update 1.4.6, which will introduce cross-play soon, along with more content updates planned for the future.
To celebrate the anniversary, a special physical collector’s edition is in the works and will be fully unveiled in June. Additionally, Re-Logic has collaborated with Lost In Cult to produce a book detailing the game’s development, titled Terraria: Design Works, which will be available for pre-order starting at 1 p.m. EST on May 28.
For those who haven’t yet joined the 70 million players who have purchased Terraria, it’s available on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, and Xbox One.
