Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Can Serve as Home Backup Batteries

Some owners of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y can now utilize their EV batteries to provide backup power during outages, thanks to the expansion of the Powershare Home Backup feature. Initially exclusive to the Cybertruck, this feature requires the Tesla Powerwall 3, with support for the Powerwall 2 and Powerwall Plus expected to arrive soon. While Tesla’s EVs are not the only ones capable of bidirectional charging—brands like Kia and GM also offer vehicle-to-home power—Nissan’s Leaf has been providing power-to-grid charging for years.

According to Tesla, the Model 3 and Model Y can supply home backup power for over two days for Premium and Performance models, which is less than the “over three days” claimed for the Cybertruck’s battery.

As noted, Tesla guarantees that Home Backup will function on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered from October 1st onward, as not all older models are equipped with the necessary PCS2 Lite inverter. Currently, this feature is only confirmed for the US and Puerto Rico, with no availability in Canada or for the larger Model S and Model X. Additionally, the Powershare Grid Support feature remains exclusive to the Cybertruck.
