The acclaimed sci-fi anime from spring is returning for a second season.
Snowball Earth is set to return for a second season. The announcement came right after the finale of season 1, which aired its 13th episode on Friday. You can catch the anime on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Disney Plus.
The new season was teased with a trailer that features kaiju, massive robots, a cursed cat, and a father figure who’s missing his eyeballs. While a specific release date hasn’t been revealed, the fact that there’s enough animation for a teaser is a good sign. The series is described on Toho Animation’s YouTube channel as follows:
“Yukio, I’m going to make a friend.”
For the introverted Tetsuo, his only companion has been the giant robot Yukio. Together, they stood as humanity’s “saviors,” battling against monstrous invaders from space. A decade has passed since their last desperate fight for survival.
Upon Tetsuo’s return to Earth, he discovers a world transformed into a frozen wasteland—now known as Snowball Earth. With the promise he made to Yukio still in his heart, Tetsuo steps into this unfamiliar and icy realm.
The anime is adapted from the manga by Yuhiro Tsujitsugi, which has been serialized for 11 volumes in Monthly! Spirits (Shogakukan) and has sold over 800,000 copies globally. The English version is licensed and published by Viz Media, with the first eight volumes available and the ninth set to release on August 18, 2026.
The first season of Snowball Earth was brought to life by Studio Kai, known for their work on this year’s hit dark fantasy series, Sentenced to Be a Hero. They also animated another standout from the spring 2026 lineup, The Ramparts of Ice, and have been involved in multiple seasons of Umamusume: Pretty Derby, among other projects. However, the studio faced financial difficulties, filing for insolvency in April after reporting a loss of ¥565 million in 2025. The announcement for season 2 of Snowball Earth did not clarify whether Studio Kai will return for production or if a new studio will take over.
Subaru and the team are on a mission to show that isekai anime can indeed shine at times.
