The Boroughs Emerges as the Spiritual Successor to Stranger Things, Garnering Over 5 Million Views on Netflix

The Boroughs, a sci-fi horror series featuring a group of elderly retirees banding together against a dark force in their retirement community, wrapped up its first season with a cliffhanger that left us craving more. And it seems we’re not alone in that sentiment.

While it didn’t snag the top spot on Netflix’s Top 10 this week, the show, produced by the Duffer Brothers, secured a solid No. 2 with 5.6 million views. Although Netflix’s metrics have evolved since the debut of Stranger Things in 2016, it’s reported that the latter quickly became a massive hit, racking up 8.2 million views within its first 16 days and outpacing other popular series like Jessica Jones, House of Cards, and Daredevil.

Though The Boroughs hasn’t quite reached the heights of Stranger Things, its nearly six million views indicate it’s making a significant impact with Netflix audiences.

The series benefits from a stellar cast, featuring renowned actors such as Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman. One of its standout qualities is the dynamic chemistry among the cast, blending their experience and wisdom into a camaraderie reminiscent of the early days of the Stranger Things kids.

As the first season concludes, the future of The Boroughs remains uncertain. However, the way it wrapped up suggests that showrunners Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews have plenty more stories to explore.

“We knew how long we wanted the show to run, what we wanted to say about it,” Matthews shared in a video interview. “So we want to do more. Let’s just see if we get to.”

The Boroughs is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
