The Division Could Be Introducing Features Destiny Fans Have Always Desired

The Division launched nearly a decade ago, and while you can still dive into its world, it hasn’t seen a significant update since 2018. That might be changing soon. Recent marketing for “The Division: Definitive Edition” has surfaced in Japan, hinting that this Tom Clancy loot shooter could be getting a modern revamp to draw players back into its snowy, post-apocalyptic New York City.

A mural promoting this unannounced version was spotted at the FPS Day X esports event, where additional details about the franchise were shared, including a new “Realism Mode” for The Division 2. This mode aims to shift the RPG experience closer to a traditional shooter with faster time-to-kills and other lethal adjustments. Given that the first Division game debuted in March 2016, it’s plausible that this Definitive Edition could launch in just a few months.

Speculation about what the Definitive Edition might include has been buzzing on The Division subreddit. Could it be a current-gen remaster that brings the game to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S? Some doubt this, especially since The Division 2 never received a remaster. Others would be satisfied with support for 60fps on consoles and various quality-of-life enhancements. There are also whispers of potential new story content or the integration of certain mechanics and modes from the sequel back into the original.

It’s also possible that Ubisoft’s idea of a “Definitive Edition” involves bundling The Division 1 and The Division 2 into a single, cohesive package. This would be a significant undertaking, and the logistics of how it would work remain unclear. The second game’s Warlords of New York expansion included the first game’s location, but there’s still a wealth of missions, storylines, and content that could be incorporated. A unified package could also make it a strong candidate for a Switch 2 port.

If this Definitive Edition successfully brings the classic game to life for both new and returning players in 2026, developer Massive will be fulfilling a dream many Destiny fans have harbored since Destiny 2 concluded its extensive 10-year narrative with The Final Shape. While Bungie has integrated some of the best elements from the original game into Destiny 2 over the years, it has also left behind much of the sequel’s original campaign to accommodate ongoing expansions.

Fans have long requested the return of the Red War and other omitted content. Another lofty wish is for the original Destiny to be revived in a “vanilla” form akin to World of Warcraft Classic, offering a visual overhaul on modern platforms to entice players back. Additionally, the third common request in response to any new announcement from Destiny’s social media is for Bungie to start fresh with Destiny 3.

These are ambitious requests for a studio that has faced numerous layoffs, budget cuts, and player attrition in recent years, especially while working on its new sci-fi shooter, Marathon, alongside ongoing Destiny 2 updates. However, this is the situation fans of The Division find themselves in right now. Executive producer Julian Gerighty recently hinted that The Division 3 is “shaping up to be a monster.” Alongside the newly revealed Realism Mode, The Division 2 is also set to receive its delayed Survivors mode later this year.

If the Definitive Edition of the original game meets expectations, fans of the apocalyptic shooter will have plenty to enjoy. Destiny 2 players might even find themselves feeling a bit envious, a sentiment they haven’t often experienced before.
